Terminology as a source of difficulty in translating international legal discourses: an empirical cross-genre study

Abstract Despite the persistent focus on terminology in legal translation studies, to date, no large-scale research has empirically explored difficulty of translating genres. Approaches studies more broadly remain limited scope. To fill this gap, a study was conducted measure associated with and phraseology, as well other domains, LETRINT 1+ corpus, including nine representative genres three institutional settings (the European Union, United Nations World Trade Organization). For comparative purposes, four levels were assigned multiple terminological features by group specialized translators through consensus-building process annotation based cognitive effort estimated for decision-making. The scores obtained confirm correlation between singularity higher difficulty, connection commonly used terms phrasemes, core economic terms, lower levels. findings also provide evidence prominence non-legal discourses, aggregate each genre examined, which can be particularly useful informing quality assurance, project management translator training.
